ChatGPT Memory allows ChatGPT to remember useful information from previous interactions so you do not have to explain the same preferences, projects, or circumstances every time you start a new conversation.
To use ChatGPT Memory, go to Settings → Personalization → Memory and make sure memory is enabled. You can review what ChatGPT remembers in your Memory Summary, ask ChatGPT directly what it remembers, correct information that is wrong or outdated, or turn Memory off if you do not want previous context used in future conversations.
Unlike the older Saved Memories system, the newer ChatGPT Memory can automatically update its understanding of relevant context over time.
What Does ChatGPT Memory Actually Do?
Memory helps ChatGPT carry useful context from one conversation into another.
For example, ChatGPT might remember information about:
- Your preferences
- A project you are working on
- How you prefer answers to be formatted
- Goals you have discussed
- Constraints that repeatedly affect your questions
- Other relevant information from previous conversations
The purpose is to reduce repetition.
Without Memory, you might have to explain the same background every time you open a new conversation. With Memory enabled, ChatGPT can use relevant context from previous chats, files, and supported connected apps when personalizing a new response.
That does not mean every detail from every conversation is permanently stored as a separate memory.
The current system instead tries to maintain a useful, continuously updated understanding of the context that is most relevant to you.
How to Turn On ChatGPT Memory
To check whether Memory is enabled:
- Open ChatGPT.
- Open Settings.
- Select Personalization.
- Find Memory.
- Turn Enable memory on if it is currently disabled.
You can return to the same setting whenever you want to turn Memory off.
The exact Memory experience available to you can vary by plan, region, workspace, and rollout status.
How Do You See What ChatGPT Remembers About You?
Open:
Settings → Personalization → Memory Summary → Manage
Your Memory Summary provides a high-level view of information ChatGPT may use to personalize its responses.
There is an important limitation:
The Memory Summary does not necessarily show every piece of context ChatGPT may remember or use.
OpenAI describes it as a summary of the most important information rather than a complete database of everything ChatGPT knows from previous conversations.
There is another very simple way to check.
Ask ChatGPT:
“What do you remember about me?”
If you are wondering about something specific, ask about that information directly.
Does ChatGPT Automatically Remember Everything You Say?
No.
Memory is not intended to create a permanent transcript of every sentence you have ever written.
The newer system automatically synthesizes information from your interactions and tries to retain context that will be useful later. OpenAI says the system was redesigned partly because the previous Saved Memories approach could become stale or contradictory as users accumulated more information over time.
For example, something that was true six months ago may no longer be true today.
The newer Memory system is designed to update its understanding as newer context becomes available instead of simply accumulating an endless list of disconnected facts.
Can You Tell ChatGPT to Remember Something?
Yes.
You can explicitly tell ChatGPT that a piece of information should be remembered.
For example:
“Remember that I prefer concise answers.”
or:
“Remember that this project uses metric measurements.”
However, the current Memory system does not rely only on explicit commands such as these. When Memory is enabled, ChatGPT can automatically identify useful context from your conversations and incorporate it into its evolving memory.
So you do not have to say “remember this” every time you mention something that may be useful later.
How Do You Correct Something ChatGPT Remembers Incorrectly?
If information in your Memory Summary is wrong or outdated, you can change it.
OpenAI currently provides two primary ways to edit the Memory Summary:
- Type the correction into the text box at the bottom of the Memory Summary.
- Highlight the relevant text in the Memory Summary and make a specific correction.
The summary will then be updated to reflect the new information.
You can also simply correct ChatGPT during a conversation when it uses outdated context.
This is particularly useful for information that changes over time, such as a project status, preference, goal, or routine.
Can ChatGPT Remember Information From Old Conversations?
Yes, when Memory is enabled, relevant context from past conversations can contribute to future responses.
This is one of the main reasons Memory exists: you should not always have to locate an old conversation and explain everything again just because you opened a new chat.
OpenAI’s improved Memory system is specifically designed to synthesize relevant context from past chats and keep that understanding more current over time.
However, that does not mean ChatGPT will recall every detail from every old conversation on demand.
Memory is selective, and the Memory Summary itself is only a high-level representation of the context ChatGPT may use.
Does Deleting a Chat Delete ChatGPT’s Memory of It?
Not necessarily.
This is an important distinction.
Deleting a conversation removes that conversation from your chat history, but information derived from that conversation may also exist in Memory or in another source.
OpenAI says that to fully remove information ChatGPT may know about you, you need to remove every source containing that information. That can include:
- Past chats
- Archived chats
- Files
- The Memory Summary
- Connected apps containing the same information
So deleting one conversation alone may not fully remove a piece of information if it exists elsewhere.
How Do You Remove Something From ChatGPT Memory?
If something appears in your Memory Summary and you no longer want ChatGPT to use it, open:
Settings → Personalization → Memory Summary → Manage
From there, you can request changes to the Memory Summary.
But if your goal is to fully remove a particular piece of information, changing the summary alone may not be sufficient.
You should also delete the original chat and any other sources containing the information, including archived chats, files, or connected apps where applicable.
This is one of the most important differences between changing what appears in your Memory Summary and removing all sources from which ChatGPT could learn the information again.
Can You Turn ChatGPT Memory Off?
Yes.
Go to:
Settings → Personalization → Memory
and turn Memory off.
When Memory is disabled, ChatGPT will not use Memory to personalize new conversations in the same way.
However, simply turning Memory off is different from deleting your previous chats.
OpenAI also provides a Delete and turn off memory option from the three-dot menu on the Memory Summary page. Importantly, OpenAI states that this does not delete your past chats. If Memory is enabled again later, information remaining in those chats may contribute to new memories.
What Is Temporary Chat?
If you want to have a conversation without Memory being used or updated, use Temporary Chat.
Temporary Chats:
- Do not use existing memories
- Do not create new memories
That makes Temporary Chat useful when you are discussing something that you do not want influencing future personalized responses.
This is different from permanently disabling Memory for your entire ChatGPT account.
You can leave Memory enabled for normal conversations and use Temporary Chat when you want an isolated conversation.
Can ChatGPT Memory Use Information From Files or Connected Apps?
Yes, in supported circumstances.
OpenAI says the current Memory system can use useful context from chats, files, and connected apps to personalize responses when Memory is enabled.
For example, OpenAI expanded Memory in 2026 so relevant context can, where supported, come from previous chats, saved context, files, and connected services.
However, access and data-use rules vary depending on the particular app, source, plan, and workspace.
Connecting an external service should therefore not be interpreted as giving ChatGPT unlimited access to everything in that service.
Is ChatGPT Memory the Same as Custom Instructions?
No.
They can both affect how ChatGPT responds, but they serve different purposes.
Custom Instructions are explicit directions you provide about what ChatGPT should know or how you want it to respond.
Memory can develop from relevant context across your interactions and update over time.
For example:
Custom Instruction:
“Always use Celsius when discussing temperature.”
Memory:
ChatGPT may learn from your conversations that you are working on a particular long-term project and use that context when the project comes up again.
If something is an explicit, permanent instruction about how you want ChatGPT to respond, Custom Instructions may be the clearer place for it.
What Happened to Saved Memories?
ChatGPT’s Memory system changed significantly in 2026.
The older system relied more heavily on individual Saved Memories. OpenAI found that this approach could become stale and could accumulate contradictory information over time.
The newer Memory system instead continuously synthesizes relevant context and updates its understanding as your circumstances change.
OpenAI began rolling out this improved Memory experience in June 2026, initially to Plus and Pro users in the United States before expanding availability.
The legacy Saved Memories system still exists as an option for eligible users who prefer it.
This is why older ChatGPT Memory tutorials may show settings or management options that look different from the interface you see today.
Should You Use ChatGPT Memory?
Memory is useful if you regularly use ChatGPT and find yourself repeating the same background information.
It is particularly helpful for:
- Long-term projects
- Recurring workflows
- Personal preferences
- Writing preferences
- Ongoing research
- Repeated planning
- Tasks where previous decisions matter
If you prefer every new conversation to start without context from previous chats, you can turn Memory off instead.
And if you only occasionally want an isolated conversation, Temporary Chat gives you that option without disabling Memory entirely.
So, How Does ChatGPT Memory Work?
ChatGPT Memory helps ChatGPT carry useful context across conversations so you do not have to start from zero every time.
Turn it on or off through Settings → Personalization → Memory, review what it remembers through Memory Summary, correct information when it becomes outdated, and use Temporary Chat when you do not want a conversation to use or create memories.
The most important thing to understand is that the current Memory system is not simply a list of facts you manually saved.
It is designed to build and continually update relevant context from your interactions, which is why ChatGPT can become more useful for ongoing projects and repeated conversations over time.
